Art Comes First

I had the pleasure of following ACF's Sam Lambert and Shaka Maidoh for our exclusive story " a day with..."

"Sam Lambert and Shaka Maidoh founded the ACF in order to circulate sartorial nourishment, oxygenating time-based projects through dynamic collaborations with different creatives in their network. The ACF's network continues to both define and redefine the real ACF with Lambert and Maidoh dedicated to pumping the day-to-day lifeblood through its ever expanding creative corpo partly by provoking their peers with specific creative concepts. The particular magnetism that binds together individual contributors to the ACF and its projects comes directly from their shared admiration of craftsmanship's history and their dedication to its future."

The day began with a taxi ride to the Spencer Hart store on Saville Row ( this is where Sam learnt his trade and is now hired along with Shaka for ACF’s creative consultancy services). We began chatting about the next step for ACF and their clothing line Avec Ces Freres, particularly if they had any collaborations in the pipe line. Sam and Shaka were very excited to tell me as much as they could about their up and coming work, but could not disclose a lot. Sam mentioned, “The next one is going to really surprise people, it’s a big one!” I tried to dig a little deeper but both Sam and Shaka held back but I could tell they were very excited. You know that these guys will never do anything in half measures, so when they’re excited about something we should all be excited too.

ACF is far more than just a creative duo.  Think of Art Comes First as a tree, a big tree, now think of their clothing brand Avec Ces Freres as a branch, a very well made branch. The Saville Row roots of Sam and Shaka can clearly be seen in their work, they mix the clean and dignified cut with innovative pattern making and details, to give a unique aesthetic for the modern gentleman.  The brand often uses travel and parts of their journey for inspiration and this reflects in the garments they produce with comfort in their tailored pieces a priority.

As my day drew to a close something that I couldn’t help but notice, whilst enjoying some Moroccan food and shisha at the guys favourite chill out spot Momo’s, was Sam and Shaka’s genuine interest in the people they meet and the places they go; always on the search for their next inspiration. Their positivity towards everyone they encounter and in everything they do cannot only be seen in their work, but in the people who follow it. Art Comes First is far more than just a brand, it’s a movement.
